Zsolt Gyenes, curator of VAC – Visual Acoustics, is delivering a presentation on the theme of visual acoustics. The presentation is followed by an exhibition tour led by the curator himself. ART ADDITIVES is a series of talks, workshops, encounters and satellite events developed around the Spazju Kreattiv contemporary visual arts programme. The initiative links directly to Fondazzjoni Kreattivita’s aim of acting ‘as a catalyst for all forms of expression, by providing space and extending experience to reach all people and involve them in interactive participation. Art Additives will add to the Spazju Kreattiv experience of contemporary art by generating discussion and debate, welcoming new audiences into the space, and encouraging conversation between artists and those interested in the arts. An Old-New Genre: Visual Music |

1. Curator's Note Hear the picture, see the sound! “It was strewn with fine sand, and Jonathan, by means of an old cello bow which he drew up and down the edge from top to bottom made it vibrate, and according to its motion the excited sand grouped and arranged itself in astonishingly precise and varied figures and arabesques. This visible acoustic, wherein the simple and the mysterious, law and miracle, so charmingly mingled, pleased us lads exceedingly; [...]” Thomas Mann: Doctor Faustus, The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkühn as Told by a Friend, Translated from German by H. T. Lowe-Porter, Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1948., pp. 17-18 Common structural basis of all types of sensation is being hidden by creative possibilities in connection with correspondence. What does visual music/acoustics mean? What differences are there between the established compositional genres (abstract or generative, silent or sound, etc.) animation, motion picture, and many others? What type of role could artists who having such an experimental attitude to sound fulfill, and what is their contribution to the realism debate? What would be the common language that would help us walk the path? These and many other questions contribute to the rich diversity of issues that surround what we refer to as visual music. Through the computer, man has created an active, creative partner to produce wholly new aesthetic experiences (Noll, 1967). Through digital technology, visual acoustics works of art experiment with new ways of merging sound and image, creating holistic works that meld traditional and digital media through a software-world, in search of realizing a new, magical age. 2. Exhibition synopsis VAC – Visual Acoustics Motto: This exhibition does not intended to be representative of every aspect of current work in the visual music/acoustics genre. This is a very small sample of the thinking and practice of the field. The artists’ definitions of the theme are actually as broad as their work indicate, having no restraints set by any boundaries. Emanating from the (classical) pure silent visual music tradition, the exhibition looks at how artists using current technology recreate this form; where the disposition of the computer as a tool with a natural proclivity of combining visual and aural structures, contributes to the quantity and quality of works. In most cases, these works present experiences that have not undergone research in the classical tradition, but rather lean towards the interest artists have in the use of such unconventional media and the excitement of experimentation. 3. Curator's Bio Dr. habil. Zsolt GYENES – Born in 1962, Gyenes is a Hungarian media artist and theoretician whom produces audio-videos, electrographic/digital works of art and sound textures. Outside of Hungary, he has held one-man exhibitions in the USA, Thailand, Malta and Poland, and has curated many national and international exhibitions and symposia. Gyenes is also a member of various artistic associations and an associate professor and director of the Visual Institute at the Kaposvár University. He has participated in or given lectures at international conferences, workshops and festivals in the USA, Thailand, Turkey, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Romania, Malta and Croatia, and has authored 7 books and some 50 articles in Hungarian and/or English. http://www.gyenes62.hu |
